The word “biokinetics” comes from two Greek words “BIOS” which means LIFE and “KINESIS” which means MOVEMENT. It is the profession concerned with IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE TRHOUGH MOVEMENT.
Biokineticists function within professional alliance to health and medicine. Biokineticists are recognised as health care practitioners, being registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Biokinetics serves a primary function to improve physical functioning and quality of life through the application of evidence-based exercise as a rehabilitation modality.
Biokinetics is the profession concerned with health promotion, the maintenance of physical abilities and final phase rehabilitation. The Biokineticist prescribes scientifically-based preventative and therapeutic exercises to address various orthopaedic problems, chronic conditions and other lifestyle related diseases.
Wellness – physical health promotion and preventative treatment
Biokineticists conduct comprehensive health assessments to identify one’s health risk factors and evaluate one’s overall physical well-being. They then implement targeted health promotion strategies, screenings and educational interventions to address health risk factors. In addition to individual care, biokineticists offer employee wellness and occupational wellness programmes designed to improve work force health, productivity and well-being. Workplace wellness initiatives help organisations create a culture of healthly living by encouraging sustainable lifestyle changes, reducing absenteeism, improving employee engagement and promoting long-term physical and mental wellbeing.
Management of chronic conditions
Biokineticists conduct clinical assessments and prescribe appropriate exercise programmes which promote the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Such diseases include, but are not limited to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis hypertension, Parkinson’s, respiratory disorders, obesity and muscular dystrophy. Biokineticists also specialize in Cardiac and stroke rehabilitation.
Sport performance enhancement
Biokineticists work closely with recreational and professional athletes to enhance their sports performance, with an emphasis on sports injury rehabilitation and prevention. With sport-specific testing and conditioning athletes can maximize endurance, speed, flexibility, agility, power, strength and reaction times.
Orthopeadic rehabilitation and injury prevention
Biokineticists prescribe injury prevention programs for individuals, as a pro-habilitation intervention, to prevent injury from occuring or worsening. They also evaluate orthopeadic injuries (acute and chronic pathologies) and prescribe individualised functional exercise programs for the rehabilitation of neck, back, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle injuries. Further, biokineticists play an important role in pre-operative rehabilitation – strengthening the body in preparation for surgery.
Biokinetics for Special populations
Biokineticists also specialise in prescription of safe exercise programs for children with motor development deficits, pregnancy, pre- and post- natal conditions, neurological conditions, cardiac conditions and for the geriatric population.
